The Labyrinth Archetype and Chapel Perilous

The Labyrinth archetype represents a spiritual journey through the internal landscape -- its secret chambers and rooms, its spiral pathways and corridors, many leading to dead ends with few escapes from the complex weave of Psyche. This 11-week Labyrinth Lab will explore multiple internal sources through solo and group rituals of worship, repetition, and escape. In addition to our ongoing practice of paratheatre methods, pantomime technique will also be introduced to create the illusion of opening and closing doors.

Our exploration of multiple sources (linked by imaginary doors) will serve as the foundation for developing the performance of "ESCAPE FROM CHAPEL PERILOUS!" (premiering Nov. 30, Dec. 1 & 2 plus Thursday Nov 29th Preview). The poetry of Sylvia Plath (from her "Crossing the Water" series) will be spoken as sermons delivered by the Chapel priest (Ed Welsh). The rest of the characters in "Chapel Perilous" are living ghosts - souls projected out of their living human bodies - performing repetitive rituals of various points of worship, or obsession, until their eventual escape and return to embodiment.
